Confirm Judge Kavanaugh ASAP

Here we go again with more Democrat dirty politics: Judge Roy Moore, Version #2 – only worse.  As you know, Judge Brett Kavanaugh is President Trump’s July 9, 2018 nominee to the Supreme Court.  A political firestorm has erupted with the Republicans pushing for confirmation and the Democrats fighting tooth-and-nail, asserting Judge Kavanaugh is “too conservative.”  It’s fair to say the confirmation process has become a political circus.

Until recently, no one seriously disputed Judge Kavanaugh’s qualifications, integrity or background.  Since 2006, he has served on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.  The Court of Appeals is the second highest federal court in the country.  The Senate Judiciary Committee has made available huge volume of documents on this nominee (100,000+ pages), more than the previous 5 nominees combined. While on the Bench, Judge Kavanaugh had written over 300 legal opinions available for everyone to review. The Democrat opposition seems to have more to do with opposing any Supreme Court nomination made by President Trump than seriously suggesting that Judge Kavanaugh was not qualified.  As Democrat leaders stated, they want to suspend the hearings until after the midterm congressional elections, hoping they could pick up additional Senate seats to oppose the confirmation.

In my view, once it because apparent the Democrats could not block or delay the confirmation on legitimate grounds, the Democrats resorted to want I’ll call “the Judge Roy Moore tactic” – if you don’t have the votes to prevail, engage in a personal attack against the candidate by digging up unflattering impossible-to-prove-or-disprove sexual allegations regarding events which supposedly happened decades ago.  Judge Moore was the defeated Alabama Republican Senate candidate running in the 12/12/17 special election.  His story is included in a blog entry on this website.  The tactic worked against Judge Moore; maybe it will work against Judge Kavanaugh.  Dirty politics as usual, right?

Late into the confirmation process, on September 13, the ranking Committee Democrat, Senator Dianne Feinstein,  disclosed that Christine Blasey Ford had previously came forward alleging that in the early 1980s a drunken Kavanaugh had attempted to rape her at a party when both were teens in high school.  Judge Kavanaugh “categorically and unequivocally” denied that the event occurred.  The sole witness named by Ms. Ford also denied the event occurred. On September 23, 2018, another woman, Deborah Ramirez, alleged sexual misconduct by Kavanaugh, in this case exposing himself at a 1983–1984 college party where all had been drinking.  Ms. Ramirez, who admitted she was drunk, had gaps in her memory and low confidence in her recollection, is now positive the event occurred as she states. Again, Judge Kavanaugh denies the allegation.  According to the Democrats, the confirmation process must be stopped while these allegations are investigated by the FBI.  It doesn’t matter that these allegations concern events occurring over 30 years ago, were never contemporaneously reported to police or anyone else, involve drunken teenager behavior and recollection, and, even if true, were unlikely to be criminal under the facts alleged.

I won’t digress into any analysis of “he said, she said” regarding these allegations.  As stated on September 19th by the NY Times: “It is no secret that Dr. Blasey is a registered Democrat who has given money to progressive organizations and campaigns.”  My common sense says this is much ado about nothing and more of the currently politically correct “me too” movement.  There are significant questions whether  Dr. Ford and  Ms. Ramarez have correct recollections of drunken teenage events occurring over 30 years ago, are not improperly influenced by Democrats and “me too” and are telling the unbiased truth.  Judge Kavanaugh has denied their allegations.  At this point in time, over 30 years later, the truth of the salacious claims is frankly irrelevant.   He has a 35 year unblemished track record as an attorney and Circuit Court jurist.  That along is enough to warrant his confirmation to the Supreme Court.

My common sense tells me that Judge Kavanaugh is a just and honorable man.    Do we let unproven (and likely unprovable) allegations from his teen years detract from his credentials, integrity and long-time favorable track record?  Do we let a political circus prevent a proven, gifted public servant from gaining higher office?  Do we let “political correctness” overcome logic and reason?  I think not.  As President Trump stated:  “The Democrats are working hard to destroy a wonderful man, and a man who has the potential to be one of our greatest Supreme Court Justices ever, with an array of False Accusations the likes of which have never been seen before!”

This is yet another example of political correctness run amok.  If you dislike President Trump and think Judge Kavanaugh is too conservation, in a word: “tough”.  As a nation, under our Constitution, we elected our President and Senators, who are fulfilling their responsibilities.  It is unfortunate Democrats and Republicans cannot seem to agree on anything.  However, it is blatantly un-American to trash a reputation in an attempt to delay or block the appointment of an eminently qualified candidate.   I hope and urge the Committee to move forward and confirm Judge Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court.

For the record, I strongly disapprove of any male abusing or assaulting a woman. I also believe times, people and societal mores change.  What might have happened as a teenager decades ago should not negate many years of proven ethical conduct.  As a country, we also believe in second chances.  We should not let a mistake from the past indelibly damage a reputation and future prospects.  This should be even more true when the “mistake” is an unproven allegation.  Again, for the record, I find fault with certain actions and platforms of both the Republican and Democrat parties.  In this instance, it is the Democrats who should be ashamed of themselves.
